Mastodon Collections
Version 4.6 of Mastodon Collections introduces lists of users to make it easier to find accounts on specific topics.
When Bluesky launched, they had the great idea of Starter Packs. Essentially, these were user lists focused on specific topics. Anyone interested in TypeScript could find a TypeScript Starter Pack and then follow all, or even just individual, accounts within it with a single click.
The idea quickly arose that this would also be a good idea for Mastodon, because finding accounts, especially for newcomers, can be difficult.
Since such new features on Mastodon always take time to develop (which is often a good thing, as it allows for careful consideration), there was an external service for creating such packs. I created a list for Kirby enthusiasts there at the time: https://fedidevs.com/s/NjY/
Now, however, came the good news that Mastodon is providing this functionality itself with its new Collections feature.
Starting with Mastodon 4.6, collections can be created and accounts added. Users can specify whether they can be added to collections via their user settings.
I got started right away and migrated my old starter pack:
I noticed that I couldn't add all users yet. This was partly because the instances hadn't installed the update, or partly because the accounts had disabled the option to be found in lists in their settings.
I still think this is a good idea and will definitely create a few more collections.
If you also write about Kirby on Mastodon, you could probably be a good fit for the collection. Up to 25 users can be in a collection. Just get in touch, and I'll gladly add you!
